The Complete Airbrushed Aftercare Guide

The Science of your Glow

The Maillard Reaction

Because your spray tan is a chemical reaction—the Maillard Reaction—the products you use in the next 10 days will determine the color, depth, and longevity of your glow. Since our business cards are small, this guide holds the "missing pieces" of your aftercare.

The First Rinse:

WHY WATER ONLY?

For the first 24 hours, the DHA (the active tanning sugar) is still bonding with the keratin proteins in your skin. Using soap—even "gentle" ones—can interrupt this bond or spike your skin's pH, causing the tan to develop unevenly or turn a brassy orange.

• The Bronzer: The brown color you see in the shower is just a cosmetic guide. Your actual tan is clear and develops over 24 hours.

• No Friction: Pat your skin dry. Do not rub with a towel, as this acts as mechanical exfoliation.

Aftercare Ingredients:

To keep your tan for 7–10 days, you must avoid ingredients that act as "solvents" or "exfoliants."

THE RED FLAGS (AVOID THESE)

• Mineral Oil & Petrolatum: Found in Olay and Nivea. These sit on top of the skin and "suffocate" the tan, causing it to break up and look like alligator skin.

• Sulfates (SLS/SLES): Found in Dove, Irish Spring, and Dial. These are harsh detergents that strip the pigment and spike alkalinity.

• Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): "Anti-aging" or "Brightening" lotions that force your skin cells to shed prematurely.

THE GREEN LIGHTS (TAN-SAFE)

  • Humectants: Look for Glycerin or Hyaluronic Acid. These pull moisture into the cells to keep the tan plump and vibrant.

  • Plant-Based Oils: Jojoba, Hemp Seed, and Grapeseed oils mimic your skin's natural sebum and hydrate without dissolving the DHA.

  • Recommended Brands: Cereve, Native (Body Wash), Vanicream (Gentle Wash), but the very best results come with using our curated in-studio aftercare line, made specifically for sunless.

Pro Tip:

THE PH SECRET

Healthy skin is naturally acidic (pH 4.5–5.5). Most drugstore bar soaps are highly alkaline (pH 9+). This pH jump is the #1 reason a tan turns orange. Keeping your skin in the acidic "sweet spot" ensures a crisp, cool brown fade. Our sunless safe product line is PH balanced for sunless science.

Daily Maintenance:

Hydrate: Drink your water! Dehydrated skin sheds faster.
• Shower Temperature: Keep it lukewarm. Hot water opens the pores and can "leak" the pigment. • Moisturize: Apply a safe, water-based lotion twice daily starting 24 hours after your session.
